The Peanut Allergy Problem

More than 3 million people in America have a peanut allergy which translates into 1 out of every 90 people or 1.10% of the population. The peanut allergy problem continues to grow.

Peanuts are a dietary protein that?s very cheap and generally in its purest form is peanut butter. Yet it has become one of the most common foods for allergies. Unfortunately peanuts are finding there way into many different foods and trace amounts are also entering the food chain from varying angles which is making the peanut allergy problem worse.

Because of the seriousness of these allergies foods are not warning that trace amount of peanuts may be in the product while other products are going for the market based on the peanut allergy problem and proudly announcing there are no peanuts in their products so relax and enjoy.

Anaphylactic shock is one allergic reaction. It can move rapidly becoming fatal in just a couple of minutes. It requires epinephrine as the earliest signs. Symptoms include apprehension, flushing, hives, swollen mouth, eyes, or tongue, itching, tightness in the throat and chest, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, sudden fatigue, chills, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and on the most serious end loss of consciousness and death. The personal allergy problem should not be ignored.

So with the peanut allergy problem being such a problem how come so many still get caught. Sometimes it is a result of incomplete labeling of the packaging, it can also be ignorance of food allergies at schools or restaurants. Some medications can actually cause a peanut reaction, and traces of peanuts aren?t always marked on packages.

Although things are improving the peanut allergy problem is enhanced because often food labels aren?t carefully read. As consumers we are also not trained to question the contents our food where it is prepared and does not have label packaging such as in restaurant take out. Sharing utensils can even be dangerous to someone with a peanut allergy. And taste testing just a tiny bit can be deadly.

The peanut allergy problem also has an identity issue. Many are not aware that just trace elements can kill. We also have a tendency to minimize or deny the allergy even if we have recognized previous symptoms. Failure to tell someone when an allergic reaction is occurring is also a big problem and the biggest problem is not wearing a medical bracelet that warns of a peanut allergy.

The peanut allergy problem has sees a great deal of failure in the treatment end. Many peanut allergy sufferers do not carry epinephrine sold as Epi-Pen?, Ana-Kit ?. They should have it on them at all times and they do not. And of those that carry it on them many do not use it faster enough. They also do not carry two epinephrine doses on them and they should because the second one is often required. Lastly failure for the individual to be taken to hospital can cause death.

Lifestyle changes, better awareness, better packaging, better training in dealing with a reaction, and faster medical intervention are all ways that will help reduce the peanut allergy problem.

Allergy - What So Special About This Disease?

Many people are aware that an allergic reaction is responsible, at least in part, for the asthmatic state of these people. Do you see the connection?

When a person is allergic to foods or inhalants, such as dust or chemicals, those allergens set off an allergic response that eventually results in an irritation of the lining and muscles in the lungs.

Most doctors are well aware that the allergic process will manifest itself to target several of our organs, be it the digestive tract, the skin, or the nervous system.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that what we call gastritis may result, in part, from an allergic reaction targeted at the digestive tract, or that what we call arthritis may be an allergic reaction targeted at the joints.

The same is true of asthma. What we call an asthmatic attack may be an allergic reaction targeted at the lungs.

Do you know that there are lots of ?hidden? allergies that are so hard to detect and control. It is the negative reaction to a given food that may not occur until several days after contact.

Moreover, these allergens can be found in both the foods we eat and in the environment. As a result, asthmatics must examine both their diet and their home and work environments for possible causes of their attacks.

Therefore, it is our body?s biochemistry which is the first suspect to our asthmatic allergic process.

There are different types of allergies. IgE-mediated allergies, allergies to common grasses, pollens, molds, and dander.

The IgE also known as Immunoglobin E allergy antibody was discovered in 1967. According to Dr Alfred Zamm, he mentioned that the body?s defense system mistakenly recognizes an allergen as an enemy, a foreign substance, as something that must be eliminated quickly.

He said,

?The immune system starts churning out a special kind of antibody to neutralize or annihilate the invaders, just as though they were disease germs. Now the body is "sensitized," primed for the next invasion. (If it doesn't come, the antibodies diminish in number; that's why the longer one can stay away from an offending substance, the better.)

Now the allergen particles reappear. Whenever an antigen meets its specific antibody, they lock together like two magnets. One effect is that the small blood vessels dilate; another is that some of the specialized mast cells to release histamine that circulates and settles all over the body, and those sues that are particularly sensitive react, swelling and stimulating surrounding nerves, causing itching, burning, redness, and all the uncomfortable symptoms associated with an allergic reaction.

If the reacting organ is the skin, its blood vessels and cells?now swollen, distorted, Broken down, and oozing their contents?appear as a rash. If it happens in the mucus lining of the nose, sinuses, or tracheobronchial tree, the glands produce surplus mucus, which the victim attempts to get rid of by coughing, sneezing, or nose blowing.?

You may be particularly sensitive to other substances but other antibodies are still poorly understood. Most food allergies are not IgE-mediated and attention is not paid to them in adults.

Do you know that other substances, to which you may be sensitive, such as chemical and automotive fumes, formaldehyde, perfumes, natural gas, and petrochemical products not mediated by this antibody, are also often not acknowledged by conventional allergists?

Some people with asthma know that they are chemically sensitive, especially if they have connected the onset of their asthma with the sensitivity. Whether these are "true" allergies or not, the outcome is exactly the same.

That?s why the question is to what you are allergic to, still continues to puzzle most asthmatics.

Make Allergy Triggers Disappear Part -2

Hello again. Last time we were talking about two very common allergy triggers found in most homes. These were mold and dust caused by dirty furnace and air conditioner filters. There is also some information on the importance of having the right humidity in your home to make the air as comfortable as possible for someone who suffers from allergies or even asthma.

A trigger is simply something that may irritate the bronchial tubes were respiratory system of someone who is predisposed to having difficulty breathing. Anything that may irritate the breathing tubes of someone with even a somewhat compromised respiratory system should be considered a trigger. So think of a trigger as the event that starts an allergic reaction or an asthmatic attack and you can easier understand the importance of limiting exposure to these triggers.

While wall to wall carpet is a great feature in a house it can harbor massive amounts of dirt and dust along with pet hair, dander and yes, even mold. If you have a family member that seems to have more difficulty breathing at night, you might want to consider removing the carpeting at least in the bedroom. No matter how well you vacuum carpet some debris will inevitably be trapped. If you consider this only as a last resort, your next option is to make certain you have a high quality vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filtration exhaust system. Although not inexpensive, and high quality vacuum will have more suction and be better able to remove more of the collected dirt in the carpet than a typical lower and vacuum.

The only real way to be certain that the carpet is not causing breathing difficulty is to remove it. There are some very nice, high quality, hardwood floors that can be used along with an area rug is a nice decorator touch. Just be certain the area rug can be removed and cleaned regularly. Be warned that some hardwood floors are installed on a foam floating bed. If enough water is able to seep between the foam in the flooring material, mold could grow and you may have traded a dirt allergy trigger for a mold allergy trigger.

Dust mites are a very typical allergy trigger found in most bedrooms. These can be controlled by placing pillows mattresses and even box springs and special dust mite proof covers. Wash bedding on a standard schedule in hot water.

Select curtains and blinds that are easily washable and preferably made of synthetic fibers. This will cut down on dust from natural fibers. Ideally, replace horizontal blinds with easy to care for vertical ones that can be wiped down weekly. Another option is a simple rollup or Roman type shade that can be taken down regularly and washed.

The key to making life for an allergy or asthma sufferer more tolerable is to limit the number of potential asthma attacks and allergy reactions. By limiting exposure to the triggers, at least in their own home, it's possible to lower the potential of the serious respiratory attack. Allergy Relief Air Purifier Can be a Friend for Life

Anyone who suffers from allergies will know how terrible life is when you are attacked by their symptoms. The doctor is always ready to offer some medication or another when this happens, and with a little effort the allergy abates. However, many people remembering the advice of the doctor to avoid any and all allergens, install an allergy relief air purifier in their house. This is one very efficient way to remove all possible allergens from the air, and keep healthy.

How to Choose the Best Allergy Relief Air Purifier for Your Home

Once you have decided to buy an allergy relief air purifier, go right ahead and do it. There are times when acting on an impulse is quite fruitful ? this is one of those times. When you are shopping for your allergy relief air purifier, you will need to know however, about certain aspects such as requirements for the size of your house or room, the process by which it effects the purification, the recurring cost, the total cost, and lastly its efficiency in maintaining the house's air.

You will need to measure your room and find out which size allergy relief air purifier would work best. In order to get the best advice, you will need to have the measurements accurately recorded so the shop sales person you visit can calculate and tell you what capacity allergy relief air purifier you will need to use.

Present allergy relief air purifiers use diverse methods of filtering the air ? one type works with replaceable filters ? where the filters have to be cleaned periodically to ensure the air circulation. The other type uses filters that need to be replaced directly instead of cleaned, ensuring exceptional purification properties.

The recurring cost for the cleaning of the filters, or exchanging the filters should be known before purchasing as this aspect will be often overlooked. You will need to find out in detail, how the allergy relief air purifier is maintained. The store may underplay instead of tell you accurately about the costs involved, so research well.

The total cost of the allergy relief air purifier would depend upon your budget. There are models available for each and every budget, so you should always ensure that you buy something qualitative, impressive looking, but also within the budget. .

The capacity of the purifier is meant for a certain cubic area, so you will need to know the exact dimensions of the house or room it will be in. Only then can the store be able to indicate the right one for your room capacity.

The Main Symptoms of Allergy

Allergy is a health condition that arises when you inhale/eat or touch certain substances your immune system is oversensitive to. Allergy may develop relatively quickly, for example you may have eaten shellfish for years with no negative effects, you try it today and oops! You discover that you're allergic to it.

The things that cause allergy are called allergens. Virtually everything might be an allergen, though there are some things that cause it much more often than others.

Common Allergy Symptoms

Runny nose Watery eyes Itching (anywhere) Stuffy nose, pressure in the nose and ears and headaches Deep bags under the eyes Hives Temperature

The Causes of Allergy Symptoms

The mechanism of becoming allergic is still unclear. There are studies pointing that allergies may have some genetic background, but this certainly is not a decisive factor. Other scientists argue that allergy is just a health condition that develops and disappears over time, with little regard to people's genes. The one thing that is certain is that there are certain specific factors which, if found in the environment, will trigger the body to develop allergy symptoms.

The list of common allergen is opened by pollen. If you're a pollen allergic, you can expect the symptoms to occur in the spring and sometimes late in the summer (late May to July). If you're unlucky enough to be allergic to Ragweed, you can expect the symptoms to show also in the fall (up to the first frost).

Another important allergen is contracted by touching the skin. Wherever water collects (shower curtains, window moldings or basements), you can expect molds to show up. The worst times for all molds allergy victims are those with high humidity, especially during rains.

The third most popular allergen (or a group of allergens) is animal dander - the proteins from the skin, saliva and urine of our furry friends. The allergy symptoms may develop after handling an animal or after contacting the house dust in a place where the pet lives or lived..

The unending source of allergens is the house dust. The most notable of all is dust mites - tiny living creatures found everywhere - in mattresses, not vacuumed carpets or upholstered furniture. Dust mites allergy is something you suffer 24/7 and the only way to fight it is to constantly clean the house you live in.

Controlling Allergy Symptoms?

Normally you're not allergic to everything, but even if you suffer from numerous allergies, you can still manage it and effectively reduce the occurrence of allergy symptoms. The first thing you should do is keeping you and your environment clear. Remember to have a shower everyday and/or bathe before bedtime. This washes off most of pollen and other allergens hiding in your hair or skin. Frequently cleaning the house is just another method of getting rid of allergens, this gets especially effective against dust mites, but also about all other allergic threats.

Advice: do not go out during dry, windy days, it will only make things worse. Remember to shut the windows and doors; you will have to rely on air conditioning both at home and in the car. Using air filtration systems will also help a lot.

Allergy Treatment- What to Know

If you suffer from allergies and are looking for allergy treatment, then you likely know that allergy treatment comes in a variety of forms. For one, allergy treatment can come from small lifestyle changes, such as a commitment to eating different foods or to avoiding certain situations. Allergy treatment can also come in the form of medicine, such as a shot or a pill. Here is a brief overview of these two most common types of allergy treatments:

Lifestyle change: If you suffer from allergies, chances are good that the allergy is treatable if you change certain things about your lifestyle. While changing your lifestyle is not a long-term solution to allergy treatment, it can provide some relief to you. For example, if you suffer from an allergy to your pet, then you can easily cut out any interaction with the pet, or you can put the pet up for adoption. Likewise, if you suffer from an allergy to a certain food, then you can begin to avoid any encounters with that food.

Medicine: You can use medicine as part of your allergy treatment if you suffer from a chronic allergy, such as an allergy to pollen, food or other airborne stimuli. The two types of medicine that are available for allergy sufferers are allergy shots (which are taken once a month in most cases) and allergy medicine, such as Claritin or Benedryl. Allergy treatments help to alleviate the symptoms, but cannot reverse the allergies within your body permanently.

Again, changing your lifestyle to suit your allergy will not act as a substitute for true allergy treatment., In fact, allergies, unlike some illnesses, are not permanently treatable. Instead, you must find solutions that will make you more comfortable. Some of these solutions do involve lifestyle changes. Others involve carefully monitoring some of your behavior, such as your food intake.

To Protect Allergy Sufferers In Your Home

To Protect Allergy Sufferers In Your Home

 by: News Canada

(NC)-For those who suffer from allergies the spring season comes much too soon. It's a time when allergy symptoms can be at their worst. Pollen levels rise during the spring as trees and flowers begin to bloom causing sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes and nasal congestion.

Thankfully, there's no place like home to escape from these airborne allergens. Or is there? Dust, mold and other allergens can also make a home seem unbearable for allergy sufferers.

The good news is that there are ways to reduce these irritants and make your home a haven from outdoor pollen and mould spore attacks.

There are a number of preventative steps that the estimated one in five Canadians who suffer from allergies can take to reduce the number of allergens in their living spaces. The most effective and simple steps involve sanitizing your environment with a thorough cleaning.

If you don't want outdoor pollen, dust, dust mites and mould to be "at home" with you, here are a few suggestions:

  • In the bedroom, discourage dust mites by encasing mattresses, pillows and box springs in airtight or allergen-proof casings and/or regularly vacuum them. Sheets should be washed weekly in hot water to kill dust mites. Use comforters and pillows made of synthetic fiber and replace synthetic pillows every two or three years.

  • In the bathroom, the biggest problem may be mold. Wash the tile behind the tub, shower doors and around the sink with an anti-fungal cleaner. Replace vinyl shower curtain liners regularly.

  • Wash curtains, drapes, bedding and children's stuffed animals in hot water to eliminate dust.

  • Keep pets and their animal danders out of bedrooms.

  • Keep furnishings, household decorations and collections of knickknacks to a minimum. The fewer surfaces on which dust can collect, the easier your home will be to clean.

  • Get rid of house plants. They are a major source of mould and dust.

  • Remove carpets and replace them with tiled or wooden floors.

  • Have furnaces serviced, ducts cleaned and appropriate filters put on the furnace and the vents. Keep humidifiers and air conditioners clean.

Air purifiers and air filters can help the health of Allergy and Asthma sufferers.

A. Smith Indoor air pollution in the form of dander, dust and pollen particulate matter can be a real irritant for suffers of asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions. In addition to removal of all direct irritant sources and minimizing the irritant containment materials in your house, you should also consider the indoor ventilation and filtration system of home.

Environmental control is the key to reducing exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens. Keeping a clean house free of dust, dander, smoke, pollen, and other airborne particulate matters will help to reduce the irritation and effect on family members with respiratory difficulties. Air cleaners, filters and hepa filters can play a role in helping to control or reduce the exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens.

Several health authorities have recognized that certain types of air filtration systems can be beneficial in reducing the amount of airborne particulates in a room. The American lung association recommends using a hepa air filter purifier for the bedrooms of asthma suffers.
The Mayo clinic recommends an air particle filter for household ventilation systems. Ionic filters and hepa filters have been endorsed or recognized by the Asthma and allergy foundation of America (AAFA) and the British Allergy Foundation seal of approval.

Selecting the wrong type of filtration system could exacerbate the problem by agitating and circulating the existing particulate matter throughout your house, so it is important to do your research thoroughly. Ionic air filters do not create high airflow patterns to clean the air and simply rely on negative ion attraction to collect the airborne particulate matter. They have demonstrates to have decent capture rate of airborne allergens and irritants like pollen, dander, tobacco smoke and dust and can help improve the quality of your indoor air environment. You can read more the ionic air filtration process at:http://www.air-purifiers-review.com/ionic-air-cleaner.htm

Air filtration systems should not be considered as a solution for any respiratory condition, nor as a reason to ignore sound medical advice and guidance about the removal of irritant sources and allergen habitats from your household. They are also not a substitute for thorough and regular cleaning of your household environment. Selecting the right air purifier system can help complement and enhance your efforts to reducing airborne particulate matters, as well as maintain a healthier indoor breathing environment.
